4- Tijuana’s Success In Tuberculosis Treatment Benefits San Diego

Tijuana’s state-of-the-art lab opened in 2006, with funding from the Mexican government as well as $400,000 from USAID for construction and testing equipment. Today, Tijuana has the most success in the treatment of drug-resistant TB in Mexico, seeing an average of 700 new cases a year. Read more

5- UAB professor taking lead in global effort against drug-resistant TB, HIV

In the African nation where the first extensively drug-resistant case of tuberculosis (XDR-TB) was found a few years ago, the doors soon will open on a new TB research facility. University of Alabama at Birmingham researcher Adrie Steyn, Ph.D., is the first scientist recruited to work at the facility. Steyn, associate professor in the UAB Department of Microbiology, is the first investigator for the new KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) in Durban, South Africa, a collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Zimbabwe. As of 2011, the country ranks 20th out of 22 on the list of high-burden TB countries. Since its inception in 2001, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (The Global Fund) has saved approximately 5.7 million lives. Each day an additional 4000 deaths are averted, but in order to continue its existing programmes and rapidly scale up towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015, The Global Fund needs to invest resources in operational or applied research to confirm where it gets most value for its dollar, measured in terms of protecting human rights, saving lives and preventing infections. 5- Infertility problem could be because of tuberculosis

Doctors say that nearly 90% of women with genital tuberculosis (GTB) are diagnosed in the 15-40 years age range. Infertility on account of GTB is 40-80%. Twoout of 10 women suffering from TB cannot bear children, but experts say that with advanced medical treatment now available, if the diagnosis is early enough, GTB can be treated and the woman can regain fertility. 2- A TB centre in Ojha that doesn’t believe in just treating the illness

There are an estimated 17,000 people in Pakistan who suffer from Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB). About 3,000 of them live in Sindh. MDR shows up in patients with TB who are not treated properly. Right now, Pakistan bears 55 per cent of the TB burden in the Eastern Mediterranean region and ranks eighth highest in the world. This makes TB a major public health problem. Read more

3- Manipur first in region to test multi drug-resistant tuberculosis

Manipur will have the first centre in the Northeast to treat multi drug-resistant TB, with one of the four national reference centres assuring the state’s intermediate reference laboratory of accreditation, in order to function as a national reference laboratory. A team from Delhi’s Lala Ram Swarup Hospital, one of the four national reference laboratories of the country for testing multi drug-resistant TB, visited the state’s intermediate reference laboratory at the medical department’s research and development wing at Lamphelpat of Imphal West last month. A study conducted in the peri-urban and rural areas of Sindh has shown that an online diagnosis of difficult tuberculosis (TB) cases is as accurate as face-to-face diagnosis. The online diagnosis of TB is one of the first few e-health initiatives in Pakistan that faces grave challenges in the fight against tuberculosis, though a national TB control programme has been in place in the country for over 15 years. 3- Refugees Can Be Effectively Treated To Prevent Tuberculo

Almost one in three recently arrived refugees in Darwin tested positive for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), research published in the latest Medical Journal of Australia has found. Researchers from the Centre for Disease Control, Northern Territory (CDC-NT) found that of 458 refugees screened between 1 February 2006 and 31 January 2009, 146 (31.9 per cent) were diagnosed with LTBI. LTBI implies past exposure to tuberculosis, leaving the individual susceptible to active infection later in life if not treated. Read more

Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the world's biggest killing diseases. The disease causes almost 2 million deaths per year. The increased mobility of the world’s population, with more people travelling across borders, intensifies the spread of tuberculosis. If not treated, each person with active TB infects on average 10 to 15 people every year. The disease mostly affects young adults in their most productive years. Read more

2- Tuberculosis no longer a 'poor man's disease'

The 'poor man's disease' tuberculosis remains one of the biggest fatal diseases in India's richest city, accounting for nearly 15% of the deaths caused by the top 10 killer illnesses last year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says that 8,953 people died of TB in 2010, a considerable drop from the previous year's 9,611. It was followed in the 2010 fatal diseases list by cancer and pneumonia that claimed 5,360 and 4,666 lives, respectively. Read more

3- Treatment delay among tuberculosis patients in Tanzania: Data from the FIDELIS Initiative

Several FIDELIS projects (Fund for Innovative DOTS Expansion through Local Initiatives to Stop TB) in Tanzania were conducted by the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programme (NTLP) during the years 2004-2008 to strengthen diagnostic and treatment services. These projects collected information on treatment delay and some of it was available for research purposes. Read more

4- Health workers deployed by BJMP to aid in curing TB

Director Chief Superintendent for BJMP-National Capital Region, Benito Dorigo announced that the action is a part of their efforts to help contain, prevent and cure TB within the jails. Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death among inmates in the Philippine jails according to records, next only to cardio-repiratory arrest. Read more

5- Men more susceptible to TB than women

Men are more susceptible to tuberculosis than women, a report said. The National Health Insurance (NHI) said there were more male patients than females suffering from tuberculosis in 2009, with 680 male and 588 female patients per 100,000 reported to receive medical treatment. It added the total number of patients with the disease has been decreasing — 330,383 in 2009, 342,891 in 2008 and 345,226 in 2007. The older people are, the more susceptible they are to tuberculosis, but income status has no influence on susceptibility, the NHI said. Read more

It is not widely known that tuberculosis is the third major killer of women aged 15-44 years, accounting for approximately 700,000 deaths a year globally and causing illness in millions more. TB is more common during and immediately after pregnancy, possibly due to the changes in immunity that occur during that time. Read more

2- Survey points to TB pill violation- 60% prescriptions do not follow dosage rules, says study

Nearly 60 per cent of tuberculosis medication dose strengths sold in India through prescriptions of private practitioners do not conform with standard TB treatment guidelines, a study has revealed. The findings corroborate suggestions made by some Indian doctors — several times over the past two decades — that a majority of private practitioners do not write correct prescriptions for treating TB. 3- Diabetics at 'higher risk of TB infection'

People with diabetes face a much higher risk of contracting tuberculosis (TB) than non-diabetics, according to results of a study published in the May issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. The study, done in medically-underserved communities on both sides of the border of Mexico and the USA, found that people with diabetes face three to five times the risk of contracting TB than non-diabetics living in the same settings. 4- Make Private TB Drug Markets Responsible Partners Of The Public Sector

This type of consistent and supervised treatment, to maximize cure rates and minimize the development of drug resistance, was thought to be more achievable in the public sector, especially in low-income settings this. "Across the 10 high tuberculosis burdened countries including India, it has been found that there is as much TB drug volume in the private sector as in the public sector and at least one third of all private sector dosages of first-line TB drugs fall outside national and international treatment recommendations," it said. "Any resulting drug misuse could be responsible for many treatment failures and for escalating the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), which is further worsening the TB epidemic," the study conducted by TB Alliance and IMS Health (a health care market research and consulting-services firm) said. Using new blood checks rather than chest X-rays would detect over 90% of imported latent TB, experts said, as opposed to the current failure to detect more than 70% of cases of latent infection. 4- 509 Cases of Tuberculosis Detected in DK

As at the quarter ending March 31, 2011, 509 cases of tuberculosis (TB) have been detected in the Dakshina Kannada district. This information was provided by district tuberculosis control organization secretary Dr Ramakrishna at a meeting of the District Tuberculosis Eradication Association chaired by its president and deputy commissioner Subodh Yadav. He said that during the said quarter 6,496 suspected cases were identified. Out of them, phegm test was conducted in 5,569 cases and 509 cases have been confirmed as tested positive. Read more

Scientists have identified a key enzyme responsible for destroying lung tissues in patients suffering from tuberculosis (TB), a discovery that could lead to new and effective treatment to prevent lung damage. In patients newly diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), a 4-drug fixed-dose combination (FDC) tablet regimen was shown to have similar efficacy to a single-drug protocol, according to the findings of a randomized trial. Christian Lienhardt, MD, MSc, PhD, from the Stop TB Partnership division of the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, and colleagues from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Paris, France reported outcomes of their clinical trial in the April 13 issue of JAMA. In a first, two pharmaceutical companies have expressed their desire to be a part of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) open source drug discovery (OSDD) project for tuberculosis (TB). If the proposals are accepted, bulk of the cost of the clinical trials will be borne by government. In the event of a drug being developed, the research organization will have a say over the pricing and the companies cannot apply for a patent. Read more

4- 32 hospital staffers died of TB

The Municipal Mazdoor Union has alleged that in the last five years, 60 employees of the BMC-run Sewri TB hospital have suffered from tuberculosis. Of these, 32 have allegedly died and 28 are taking treatment. After repeated agitation and protests to get the government to implement their long-pending demand of healthcare cover for the employees, the union, decided to adopt the Gandhian way of protest. Health experts urged patients suffering tuberculosis to strictly observe the TB DOTS or Directly Observed Treatment Short course to prevent the onset of a more complex and dangerous type, the Multi Drug Resistant TB (MDR TB). World Health Country Representative for TB Control Dr. Woo-Jin Lew explained that a patient with a poor treatment for first time TB case is most likely to develop MDR TB which requires a costlier treatment than the DOTS. This is not sensational news but in spotlight because CNS recently reported that genital tuberculosis was one of the lead causes of tubal infertility and only 2 per cent women with genital TB delivered live births. It was a very positive news that a woman with genital TB successfully completed anti-TB treatment and then due to in-vitro fertilisation technique, also succeeded in giving births to normal baby (well, two babies in this case!). 4- Why pay when TB treatment is free?

People need not be afraid of tuberculosis (TB) as it is completely curable. People should be encouraged to go to the government-run free anti-TB treatment centres (providing the WHO recommended Directly Observed Treatment Short course - DOTS), rather than opt for visiting private practitioners as paying for treatment places an additional burden on the TB patient, said Dr Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director General, Central TB Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. 4- Project Axshya to reach 744 million people with TB control services

Clearly more needs to be done for effective tuberculosis (TB) control by reaching out to the unreached populations who are least likely to access existing TB care services. Project Axshya, aims to do exactly that. Supported by one of the largest grants from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund), the five-year project got underway last year with a focus on engaging civil society to improve the reach and effectiveness of India's Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme in 374 districts across 23 Indian states, reaching some 744 million people by 2015. 3- Standard re-treatment regimen for TB 'failing' in developing world

A new study has revealed that the standard approach to re-treating tuberculosis (TB) in low and middle-income settings is failing. Researchers have called for improved access to rapid diagnostics for drug resistant TB, second-line TB treatment and antiretroviral HIV therapy. Each year, between one in ten and one in five patients treated for TB see their disease return after failing, interrupting or relapsing from treatment. Read more

According to the study done by Tuberculosis Research Centre in India alarming numbers of women with tuberculosis (TB) become homeless once diagnosed with TB. At a meeting on importance of addressing TB in context of women’s health organized by Global Health Advocates (GHA) to mark the International Women's Day (8th March), this fact sent shivers down the spine: 100,000 women are abandoned by their husbands due to TB every year in India. 2- Social determinants put women at risk of tuberculosis (TB)

It is no coincidence but rather an ill-synergy of a range of factors that increase the risk for a woman to get tuberculosis (TB). In India, sixty per cent women are poor which often means poor living conditions, poor food, long working hours and ignoring health overtime. Fifty five per cent women are anaemic. Anaemia is a cause of TB (as it accelerates progression from latent TB infection to active TB disease) and effect of TB too (once a person develops TB anaemia can set in). Read more

4- 'Be The Change' in tuberculosis control among women'

Although women get diagnosed for tuberculosis (TB) later than men, treatment outcomes among women are better than men with higher TB treatment success rate and lower default (drop-out) rate in the female patients. Among the unreached people who need TB care, a significant number of them are likely to be poor and probably women. There is a lot more we need to do to bring in the desired change in diagnosing people with TB as early as possible and treating them with standard regimens successfully. Read more

5- Tuberculosis treatment outcomes are better among women

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes are better among women as compared to those in men, said Dr KS Sachdeva, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) of the Government of India. According to the RNTCP data, among new sputum positive cases of TB registered in 2009, TB treatment success rates were higher in women (89 per cent) than those in men (87 per cent) and less women dropped out of TB treatment than men (4 per cent drop out or default rate for women, and 6 per cent default rate in men). 1- Blocking The Bacterial Efflux Pumps In TB Organisms May Reduce Multi-Drug Tolerance, Speed Up Cures

New findings on how tuberculosis (TB) bacteria develop multi-drug tolerance point to ways TB infections might be cured more quickly. The study will be published April 1 in the journal Cell. The results identify both a mechanism and a potential therapy for drug tolerance that is induced in the TB bacteria by the host cells they infect. Read more

2- Over 19.7 lakh people suffering from TB: Govt

The government said an estimated 19.7 lakh people are suffering from tuberculosis in the country. Replying to a query in Lok Sabha during the question hour, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi said the number of patients suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is estimated to be at 98,846. "The estimated number of patients suffering from tuberculosis in the country is 19,76,927," Trivedi said. Read more

3- 200 MDR TB cases occur yearly

THERE are about 200 cases of Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis occurring in the country annually, of which 20 could be of Extreme Drug Resistant TB. This is contained in the ministry of health’s annual report for the 3rd quarter, where it is stated that there are currently 317 cases of MDR and five of XDR since the rapid assessment conducted in 2007. 5- Tuberculosis rates in Birmingham reach Third World levels

The Government is being urged to reconsider its policy on vaccinating all schoolchildren for tuberculosis (TB) as rates in Birmingham reach Third World levels. The city’s Health Scrutiny Committee is writing to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley asking if the city can bring back jabs for all children and vulnerable adults. It comes after thousands of residents signed three petitions circulating across the city backing the reinstatement of a mass vaccination programme for schoolchildren, which was abandoned by the Government in 2005. In India, the government was asked to cough up INR 300,000 (>USD 6000) as compensation to be paid to the wife of the TB prison inmate who died inside Howrah Jail. Read more

2- ISU researchers find clue to stopping tuberculosis

In 2009, researchers at Iowa State found a chemical that inhibits the human immune system from killing the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Now they are working to find an enzyme that will inhibit this chemical instead. Read more

3- New antibody therapy to tackle tuberculosis

A new study, funded jointly by the Wellcome Trust and the Dunhill Medical Trust, describes an antibody-based therapy that protects against tuberculosis infection in mice. 4- Frontline reports podcast: A new TB test brings Hope

In this week's podcast, we hear about the problems associated with diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). The most widely used test for TB hasn’t changed since it was first introduced in the late eighteen hundreds. In addition, the test fails to give accurate results in more than forty to fifty percent of cases. However a long-awaited new test is raising hopes that soon we will be able to identify TB more effectively, get patients on treatment faster, and help reign in this deadly epidemic. Read more

1- Progress in tuberculosis vaccine research

Collaboration and funding are some of the major requirements for delivering new, more effective and safer vaccines against tuberculosis (TB). This was a much-heard statement during the annual research meeting of the TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI). 2- State relents, pays Rs 3 lakh for death in custody

After dilly-dallying for some time, the state government paid Rs 3 lakh last week as compensation to the wife of a convicted prisoner who died of tuberculosis in Howrah jail in 2007. Initially, the state government had decided not to pay the compensation as recommended by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The state had claimed that there was no fault on its part for the death of Bula Santra as it was not a case of custodial death in the true sense. Read more...

3- A Healthy Crisis at a UN-Backed Health Fund

The UN-backed effort to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria is in trouble. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Recently it came to light that the Geneva-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria reported that at least $34 million in grants -- used to procure drugs and other commodities for the world's poor -- had been stolen, along with some of the commodities themselves. 4- Russia no longer to provide free treatment for victims of tuberculosis

Apparently in order to save money, Moscow has decided to end government-paid-for treatment of tuberculosis and venereal diseases, a decision that, given the large number of cases in the Russian Federation, will contribute to that country’s continuing demographic decline. Read more...

5- Publication in Nature Medicine Reveals New Diagnostic Tool to Identify Active Tuberculosis Quickly and Effectively

A new diagnostic tool allowing quick and reliable identification of patients with active tuberculosis has been developed by a Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) –based research team led by Prof. Giuseppe Pantaleo. Published yesterday in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine, this discovery, based on specific profiles of the immune system, will offer clinical benefit to patients and should contribute to the development of effective vaccines against tuberculosis.
